This is a complete library of 64 hard bound books comprising a collection of the "Great Books of the Western World." It's a library of Western Civilization's greatest works, novels, philosophy and more. It includes the writings of Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Shakespeare, Milton, Issac Newton, Herman Melville, Darwin, Tolstoy, Virgil, Sophocles, Spinoza, Locke, Kant, Hegel, Goethe and many more. Pretty much all the great thought and much of the great literature in the Western World over a 2700 year span. See the pictures for details--especially the 8th image. It shows all the authors contained in the set.
The first 54 volumes contain the writings (including two volumes for Shakespeare, two for Aristotle, two for Thomas Aquinas), while the last 10 volumes are indexes by topic. You can pick a topic like Philosophy, or Imaginative Literature, or Foundations of Science and Mathematics. Then, look for readings in the general collection on that theme or topic. Each of these indexes is between 200 and 300 pages themselves.
Published by Encyclopedia Britannica in 1952 with editorial advice from the University of Chicago. The indexes were compiled a few years later and added to the set. Again, they are hard bound and, unfortunately, barely touched. On a Science Channel story about Atlantis they cited the references Plato made in two of his writings (the only information about Atlantis) and I looked them up. Yep, both are in this collection. "Moby Dick," yep, "Hamlet," even William James! Condition: I've noticed that some of the binding is starting to dry out a little, not much, but inside the books look new because they were printed on high quality paper meant to last a long time.
